They can. However some food is like poison to them. Other foods they may take no notice of because the food doesn't contain enough protein, sugar or whatever the ants are looking for.

I was wondering if its possible to keep a Lasius Niger colony and not feed them other insects? I only ask as I dont like the idea of cutting up crickets etc! although edu-science seems to sell "minced" dried insects that I could try.

Hi Tom Although freshly killed insects are best for most ants, including Lasius niger, it is understandable that you don't want to cut up insects; it can be a bit yuck! Did you notice the protein/insect jelly on edu-sci? It is very good stuff and ant colonies can thrive on it. I have some spare tubs of it if you want to try one.

I did notice it, and they have different flavours! I planned to pick up some of that and some of there pre-mixed honey solution but was unsure if the ants could thrive on just protein jelly. It might sound a bit strange, given that I really want to keep a colony, but most insects frighten me, ants not so much but spiders/crickets/cockroaches. I guess the main thing is the ants get protein to feed there young? Dried caterpillars and protein jelly with proper "meat" for Christmas seems to be the order of the day! Thanks for the offer of some jelly, but no ants yet so will just get some along with the starter kit.
