Personally I think that a slim line ant farm with a foraging tank/arena attached to it by a length of tubing is the best set up for ants. It gives them a seperate nesting area with another area that they can forage easily in.

I have an out world tank that I can cut a hole in for the tube to the slim line. Thanks again. Such a helpful lot!!

From Edu-Sci/Ants UK. I am not sure what the address is off the top of my head but if you Google it, you'll find their site.

You can get a setup of the type you describe from Ants UK, like Myrm said, but I think it's overpriced. You could use an Antworld, and attach it to your foraging box, but Antworlds aren't built for serious ant keepers. www.antsuk.com/ is the Ants UK website. Another thing you could do is make a Ytong (aerated concrete) nest for them. You can get an aerated concrete block from B&Q for a very reasonable price, and you can get glass from a cheap picture frame. All you do is carve tunnels and chambers in the front and silicone some glass there. You can connect it to a foraging box with tubing.

I prefer the glass ant farms to the plastic ones if I am honest, though both are vary good. I am basing an idea of mine of building a Bin Lid Farm on the model of the Starter Kits, though much larger of course.

I am thinking about making something up, how do they react to clay?

I don't think clay absorbs water once it's baked, which could be a problem.

The starter kit I posted is ideal to be honest, but at £50 it's a bit expensive. Probably worth it though. I'm a student and I work so I don't have lots of time to make my own farm up. I'm in a bit of a sticky situation!

If there's no other way, you could always just use a tank.

I'm in a bit of a sticky situation! the starter kit would work for a year or two which would mean you would have to buy a knew one but if your ok with that then go ahead

So I got the red ants delivered today, and I am struggling to find the 2 queens that it apparently comes with. I can see 2 slightly bigger than worker ants but they don't look anywhere near the size of a niger queen that I have or any photos I have seen of red ant queens... any ideas?
