Since I started macro photography, I've mostly been photographing rhytidoponera metallica, or the green-head ant (or just green ant in my state). This is mostly because they are a good size and are plentiful in suburban environments. So, I guess I might start posting a few pictures of them for you to see! Luckily for me, they are also very striking ants because of their lovely green jewel-like exterior. I'll post a couple every few days, I think. This is a green ant munching on a discarded bread roll I gave him. This image is also on Wikipedia, there was no image for the R. Metallica so I submitted one of the earlier ones I'd taken. EDIT: This is now going to be a general ant macro photography thread of good photos of ants that I get from time to time NOTE: Please do not take and display these without my permission! However, the large versions can be uploaded upon request

What I think might be Ochetellus Glaber- they are TINY! about 2mm in length. This is the closest I could get to them- even with 100+mm of macro extension tube!

Wow, nice work charlie, you should get them up on a stock photography website, try and earn some money from it, get photos of other bugs too.

Thanks Dr. Ant. I might try but they are lacking in high-quality at the moment- they are a bit noisy and iffy at full size because of the cheap methods I use to get the images,
Chicken- I have a Canon 60d, a 50mm f/1.8 and two 65mm extension tubes (with electronics so I can control aperture). It's a cheap workaround until I purchase a proper macro lens, but I'm waiting for Canon to release 7d mark ii (which could take another year -.-)
What do you have? Maybe you should give some extension tubes a try, they'll magnify your macro lens heaps!

nothing because my uncle had just got a new camera so he gave his old one to me including all of the kit; a spare batery, charger, strap, lens covers, camera bag, and it had yust been referbed in the states i think. so a pretty good thing that he gave it to me for free i think otherwise i would have had to pay £600-700 ($932-1087 aus) ($966-1127 us) ($965-1125 can) so my uncle said

Sounds good for 1 grand! Photography equipment can, and often is, expensive. I guess with price comes something that can last for a decade if kept properly

Here's another one I took the other day. 3 of the tiny 4mm black house ants giving a ladybug a rough trot.
