Thanks Flavus, good advice there and just making me even more indecisive, I do have enough money the problem is how much will I use the camera to make it worth the amount to spend, if I only had a few hundred £'s the decision would make itself! I don't know :/ He has a chemical engineering degree and works as a process engineer for Foster Wheeler, currently overseeing the building of a natural gas processing plant in North Western Australia: www.offshore-technology.com/projects/pluto/Link checked by Flavus101- March 22, 2011

Trust me, I have been dreaming of getting one of those for years. They will come handier then what you think. Sounds like a very smart man. I cannot beleive the amount of gas there and the project budget. Flavus

He is smart, but he had a year or two 'off the rails' when younger and ended up having to switch school and drop a year so he is very lucky, others may not have got that chance and I never tried hard enough at school so I always tell school kids I know about stuff like this so they hopefully listen and learn but I heard all this at school and didn't listen so I know it's boring

Just won an eBay bid on a used one of these: www.canon.co.uk/for_home/product_finder/cameras/digital_slr/EOS_1000D/£278 inc postage, comes with a lens kit too (18mm - 55mm) but may need to but a macro lens at a later date although they seem to be from £60 - £100 but I will try first without. Overall, not too much over my initial budget! Pretty good for a DSLR I hope

I have a Nikon D40 with a couple of lenses (including a macro lens) and a macro flash. Missed this post before :s I hope I am able to take pictures half as good as the ones I've seen you produce How good are shots with a normal lens (18-55), of ants?

Some of the photos I have shown to SOME forum members were taken with the D40, I used a few lenses, not sure which ones off the top of my head though!

How good are shots with a normal lens (18-55), of ants? No very good, to be honest. Even with a macro lens, without an extension tube, close up lenses, or a telextender, you need something like a bumble bee to fill the frame.

Ah right thanks for the info, so I would need a macro lens and what else? There are plenty going on eBay so I can keep an eye out for things I might need.

About getting a macro lens, many lenses are advertised at macro lenses, but aren't true 1:1 macro. Never get a zoom macro lens, either, as they are never as good quality as fixed focal length macro lenses. Good manufacturers include Sigma, Cannon and Tamron. Sigma and Tamron are much cheaper than Cannon, and nearly as good quality, from what I've read. I have a 90mm Tamron macro lens, and any less focal length wouldn't be enough.
I have a set of close-up lenses, but they cause a lot of chromatic aberration, so unless you can find dual element ones I suggest you try extension tubes. I have a link to a guide to making extension tubes, so I'll post that if it's okay with the soldier ants.

Thank you, I have been looking at the exact same Tamron macro lens that you have (by coincidence, been watching them on eBay and saw today in one of your other threads that you have the same one I have been looking at) I will research more once I have the camera and have got used to using it normally and progress to macro from there I think

I won a bid on eBay last night for a 75-300mm Canon lens (£91), that is not for ant photos obviously, I'm still waiting for the right macro lens to come up at the right price
