A few months to a year, they start to retro-moult and shrink.

29 August 2012, WednesdayAgain my naughty umbies are taking cocoons out of their nesting box and placing them next to a brick in the first foraging tank >.< The purple nail file is the slope up to the tubing that leads to the nesting boxes.

31 August 2012, FridayBETTLES! >.<Well, I cleaned out the mealworm tub today and counted about 3 "aliens" (mealworm pupae) and about 30 bettles. I have made up two new tubs with TESCO porridge oats and pieces of empty egg carton for them to live in and put half of the bettles in one tub and the other half in the other tub. Question is; do I sneak one of these tubs onboard the ship to feed my stowaway Lasius niger? Bettles! Aliens

The umbies have moved some of their cocoons into the tubing leading from the nesting box to the foraging tank. Not a great picture, but here it is:

2 September 2012, SundayI am on my way back to my ship now land with the possible exception of one night at home in the middle of this month I will not be home again or see my Umbies until May next year. I have put two pots of protein jelly in their tank but that will not last them. I am hoping they'll hibernate this winter or at least go into a semi-hibernation state. The coach I'm on has a sign saying no pets. I have a tub of bettles in my bag I feel a bit like Dermy when he goes to his nan's and takes his Dermestid bettles with him >.<
