19 September 2012, WednesdayUnexpected night at home tonight. Have to pop into the nearby RN Police Special Investigation Branch offices tomorrow to pick some stuff up and then I get to come back home for another night. I return to the ship on Friday morning. The Umbies are doing well. There are loads of cocoons in the tubing between the nesting box and foraging box, and I can see some new 1 st instar larvae.

Good good. And instar larvae? Instars are the stages of larvae development of which there are usually 3.

7 October 2012, Sunday
This post is a bit late as I have actually spent the last 4 days at home, the last 4 days that I will be home until May 2013. I am now back on the ship.
The Umbies seem to be fine - loads of cocoons, quite a few 3rd instar larvae and a number of 1st instar too.
I didn't see the queen until my vary last day at home. She looks well. I have left them with two tubs of ant jelly, plenty of water and a strawbarry cream candy to help them over the next eight months.

This journal is closed until I get to see them again when I get back home in May 2013.
