I live in the San Francisco, California Area. Years ago our home was subjected to massive attacks by Argentine Ants almost every day for years. Various rooms would have thousands of ants… tens of thousands of ants crawling all over the rooms. But there was one incident that I am curious about. On this one night, I was sleeping with my girlfriend in the bedroom. I am a solid sleeper but this night I awoke in the middle of the night with a tingling sensation. Waking up I didn’t know what this feeling was. I went to the bathroom and looked at myself in front of the mirror. I was Shocked: my body was covered with thousands of crawling ant! TENS OF THOUSANDS! I immediately jumped into the shower and showered the ants down the drain! After the shower I checked on my girlfriend and the bed I noticed there were zero ants on her. We fall asleep in spooner position every night. There were zero ants on her side of the bed. So here is my question: Why was I targeted by the ants? What about my makeup attracted them to me and not her? What attracted them to my side of the bed and not her side? (This only happend once and never again.) Any ideas?

WOWZA!! Pleased to hear nothing more came of that experience!! My first guess in answering your question is body odor/scent. Ants use scent more than sight to tell where they should go, what they should eat and where they might nest. And we aren't as capable as most animals with smell, so we don't realise we all let out certain smells. It's been suggested by scientists that sniffing each other's odor and mating with ones that smell 'nice' was originally an old way we (and other animals) naturally found a suitable partner from a different family (for sake of a strong immune system). Maybe you let out a different body odor to your girlfriend and the ants liked yours!

Thanks Charlie for a good reply... Fortunately, the ants did not eat me alive! <smile> They just crawled over me and left me with a tale to tell my grand kids and guests at parties! I did ultimately marry my girlfriend, and lived happily ever after with her and her billions of ants… (actually, Trillions of ants!)

Thanks Chicken2012. Well my body does run "Hot", both romantically <smile> and temperature wise. So a combo of temp and odor... Thanks for the input... Like I said, it's never happened again. Only that one time.
