It seems like my messor colony of 1 queen and 5 workers have blocked the passage door way off from the 'outside', I think they have done this and it isn't a cave in as my friend reported the same thing only the day before, he thought it was a cave in and carefully dug out the passage way with a tooth pick, now the same thing has happened to me and I'm thinking this is no coincidence so I've just left it how it is, I've looked around and i saw one worker in the deepest part of the nest but no sign of the queen or the brood. Dos anyone know what might be going on?

There is a perfectly good explanation to this. I'm guessing that your messor colony has gone into hibernation for the winter, this is perfectly normal for this time of year as the cold weather isn't very ant friendly. How would you feel if you left the front door wide open with a winter breeze streaming through your home? Wouldn't you shut your doors?

HAHA Spectrum you rule!
But yes, when there is no need to forage, some ants barricade themselves for protection. Like Spec said, this also happens during hibernation!

HAHA Charlie, did that piece of humour make you smile? I have my first ant colony of lasius niger and they have yet to go into hibernation, so that answer wasn't from personal experience. So I'm just going by what people have wrote in other topics and personal research into the scenario.

I noticed yesterday that 2 of the workers were out of the nest, i wondered how they must of got out as the hole id barricaded in, I had to suppress a urge to dig out the hole and i watched for a few minutes and then saw the ants clime into the barricaded entrance and vanish into the dirt, when i looked real close i realized they have made a supper small hole that i could barley see that they can squeeze through, it was a pretty cool disscovery
