This week I visited the Natural History Museum in London (free to get in, if anyone is interested) which owns a decently-established colony of Atta cephalotes. I spent some time watching them, it was real interesting (there are even a few majors in the nest). Their fungal pile is huge; it spills out of the two nesting boxes. There's also a webcam inside the formicarium that you can view online here: www.nhm.ac.uk/kids-only/naturecams/antcam/index.html along with some neat facts about them. I'd like to get in touch with whoever manages the colony - owning an exotic species is of great interest to me

UGH that is so AWESOME!!! Have always loved the idea of broadcasting ant feeds over the internet! Maybe I should give it a try too when I get a proper queen colony going!

Yeah, it's a really neat idea would probably need a similarly large species for it to be effective though, unless you just want to see a load of dots running about. NHM put their camera in a good spot, it's fun to watch them dumping leaves into the pile (and night-vision, ooh)!

I had the great pleasure of going to see this colony a few weeks ago whilst in London on a school trip. They were so beautiful! ;D

When ever I have been up there they have never had any leaves to cut. Not sure if I have been arriving at the wrong time or not.
