Hi all Long story short, I wanted to have a Messor Barbarus colony as the idea of them making stores was fascinating to me. I bought a block of Ytong and started to carve some tunnels while I waited for the Messor's to come back in stock. However, they never did So rather than pine I decided to carry on with my plan, but just have some Lasius Niger again (probably for the best). I'm curious though, they are listed as active May to Sept, does that mean I won't see them for 6 months a year, or just that they will be less active? My first colony didn't make it to winter so I never found out

It depends on what temperature they are being kept at.

My lasius Niger have been doing nothing these past 2 weeks (apart from when insects are provided) but my room is quite cold at the moment due to have wierd electric storage heaters that are expensive to run and the weather having been awful the past 2 weeks. So it appears temperature is truely the key as Antboy said.

So if I kept them warm they wouldn't realise it was winter and would stay active. That's good then
