The mymrecia pilosula, or jack jumper ant is one of the rare ants that can actually jump. Today while doing a film shoot in the bush, I came across what looked like a tiny bull ant.
As with all myrmecia species, I put my finger close and watched it follow me with its eyes- which are apparently effective for intruders up to a metre away- and watched it follow my finger trying to bite it.
What I wasn't expecting was for it to leap 5 times its body length, onto my finger! I got a fright, that's for sure!
No sting, luckily!
