Hello to all of you,
I couldn't find this particular question so I will ask. Will my Ants be OK on the window sill and not be adversely effected by the air pollution? I just want them to have the best possible start.
The conditions they will be in are under an open window which will be mostly closed at night, on the first floor, on a main road (not too bad by London standards most of the time) but set back by about 3 meters. Also I'll be using black card on one face and both sides to black out the sun 'underground' with red acetate I have lying around for the underground on the other face(I hear ants can't see red and I happen to have some not being used and never going to be used)
I only ask because my hometown has pristine air and water conditions where I live and London is just horrible compared to it.
Thanks, Mike.

Your ants should be fine. As long as its not thick clouds of it rolling in through the window.

Tell you the truth i'd be more worried about the heat roasting them.

Is that an actual possibility? I can organise another area if so but most flat surfaces have piles of law books and other bits and pieces. The window and room itself will only receive direct sunlight during the very early morning and only during the longest days, I think I will have moved out by then anyway.

What type of farm are they in? A lot of common ones you can buy from stores say don't put them in direct sunlight as it can kill them : (

Got the map out and there is no way that direct sunlight can enter my window (almost perfectly facing north,) As for the farm it is the AntUK starter set A. Unfortunately I cannot set up the feeding tank immediately so they will live solely in the nesting area for the short term until my first paycheck comes trough and I can afford a table of some sort, I have only been here for 2 weeks so I am still figuring out optimum placement of my limited furniture.
Also I do not yet have the colony, I just wanted to get all the information before hand since there is no point finding out the window sill can kill them after they are dead. I've had a thermometer on the sill for a few days now and the highest temperature on there so far has been 17°C which was on a very hot day. I think it was warmer outside than in my flat that day. The lowest I saw was 12°C at about 2am.

I'd think that's fine depending on the species.
edit: but that's from my experience where in aus most ants live in 17C temperature anyway?
