Looks like a surprisingly simple setup for such an advanced species. If you don't mind my asking, how did you go about making it? Nice looking colony, I hope they do well for you.

Yes, when stripped down to the basics it is very simple for a species of this caliber I agree. But I've seen so many formicariums this species have been kept in and they all do well. Even a coke bottle I think I've seen Atta kept in and they do surprisingly well! Humidity is key though, it's the substrate that makes an effective formicarium for them I think Making it... that was a long process :L Well I ordered 3 acryglass cylinders, though advertised as vases on Ebay, very cheap. Ordered some acryglass tube from antstore along with the perlite. Drilled holes in each one to an appropriate size. Then made lids as they are really vases... basically two pieces of plastic/wood so it makes a lip to fit the cylinders drill a hole in all of them, then place mesh between the two then silicon them together. Cut tubing to required size. Wrap tape around the ends where it fits into the hole so it is wedged in place. Put on a wooden board and each cylinder is siliconed to it to prevent movement. Then there you have it! @charlie. I believe the heat mat I got off eBay for about £8 though I dont use one at present, its not cold enough or me to use it. They sit in my room at 25 degrees + or - 2 degrees. @peterroughley. Thank you I shall be adding some new pics tomorrow and giving an update, lots to tell!

Man I love this Thread, please keep it coming, I thought these ants would have required you to grow the tropical plant from where they come from but if they adapt to other plants that's great, Once I have My Messor Barbarus settled and I know more what I doing, and if it all goes well, I may start a project very similar, but I will have to wait a little while other wise my wife will think I;ve lost the plot, lol

I would put a hygrometer in there for more accurate readings.
