I found this rather large Formica queen, who I believe is a Formica aserva social parasite. She was walking around, searching for a possible host entrance to invade. In my area, our prime host is Formica cf. fusca. I did not collect this queen due to the high requirements these ants hold and their aggressive demeanor. I have little siblings and I don't feel comfortable keeping these ants with them around.

Nice queen, did you collect her? You probably know what species it is but for the people who don't know it is a Formica rufibarbis. Unless Limes can tell me other wise.

I don't have the time or interest to keep her species. She is most likely a Formica aserva queen, and not F. Rufibaris. The picture was taken with an iPhone 4.

I'm not very familiar with Western U.S. ants, but I would guess Formica obscuripes. She kind of has the look of the rufa group.

I think you hit it spot on, BSF. I have found Formica aserva in my area, though.

Just a guess! I might be good at IDing some ants, but this didn't come with an intensive photo regiment. It could be anything.
