Hi.
Just wondering how do Lasius flavus cope in captivity? I know it is considered one of the three 'beginner'. Species of ant to use but on one of myrms journals it says they do not seem to cope well? And should it even be considered to be in captivity? I mean it seems quite cruel that you bascilly starve them to come up to forage ?
Cheers,Alex.

Hi Alex I have often found difficulty in keeping them in traditional ant farms with soil as they are subterranean foragers. I plan on trying again in a test set up.

You could try getting root aphids, and live plants in a thin soil set up. It would be neat to see

I have a colony of L.Flavus whom I raised from a single queen brought from AntsUK. She now has 10 workers and plenty of brood. Because I kept them in a dim light since I got them, the workers now forage actively. However, they are in a test tube in a plastic container not in a soil setup.

My story is almost the same as fraggs but they don't forage, even though their in complete darkness, and theres only eight workers.

Maybe he was expressing his love for dinosours? XD You could plant grass or plants in a slim ant nest, they may get root aphids to feed on them

Where do you get root aphid from? They occur naturally in the wild and are considered pests much like greenfly and other leaf aphids, except they are harder to spot as they live underground on the root of the plant - hence their name.
