My formica fusca slaves within my sanguinea colony keep bringing sand into the ytong (which is standing upright not laid flat) so they then put the sand infront of the glass Its not a problem yet but it will build up. Any clues how to stop the fusca from doing this? I have red filter on the nest but they still want to block out the light.
Any help is appreciated guys!

I guess the only way to stop them is to remove the sand from wherever they are getting it from. Those red filters do not work, despite what people think, and your ants are an example of proof that it does not work. Your ants feel insecure and that is why they are doing this.

Cover the glass with tin foil and then only remove it when you want to look at your ants.

Cover them up, make them feel secure.

I have put cardboard over it now, however i thought this made them really light sensitive so when i remove the cover will they not freak out?

Well, to be honest, it's either that or you let them cover up the sides for themselves, and then you'll have no way of seeing them.

True, i was thinking about making the foraging area have a plaster base and put the sand on top of that when wet so it'd be secured to the basin floor

Nice idea! I think you should make a desert themed foraging box!
