Hi everyone! I have just recently caught a queen Lasius Niger and she has settled into her new test tube home, however i have in the past used plaster of paris to make my ants nest and now wish to make one out of ytong, looking up ytong in shops round the uk i only seem to find aerated concrete blocks, are these the same? Some more questions as well, how easy is ytong to carve and what can it be carved with? and what glue can I use to stick the glass down? Thanks in advance to anyone who answers! Here is what I have found: www.wickes.co.uk/invt/213632

Yes they are the same thing. They can be carved with a screwdriver from what I hear. You simply use a bit of force (no hammer required) and scrape away at the brick. A hammer and chisel is probably what I would use because if you know what you are doing it provides a much finer cut than simply scraping away at the block. I would try a non-toxic silicon. Remember it must be non-toxic and you should let the nest cure and air out for 48 hours before introducing any live animals into it.
