Yes, that is an ideal ant farm to start them off with. As for pointers in keeping; if you click here it will take you to my main website journals page. Look at Past Ant Colonies and select Lasius niger 1. It shows how I looked after a Lasius niger colony from the vary beginning as a single queen until the colony was so large it had to move out into my garden.

It is a very good beginner set up, I use it myself for my own Lasius Niger Colony! (Queen +-16 workers) You can find instructions on how to set it up properly on Myrm's Ant School!

if you want an aphid farm, set up a foraging area. then fill it up 5-10 cm of dirt, if it's a big box. then keep it moist by watering it and grow some dandylions in there. then somehow get aphids into it. and connect it up to ant farm. Result: you only need to give them beetles/bugs.

I started with Lasius Niger Yet they all died , I then got Myrmica Rubra and they are now 2-3 years old and have 200+ workers.

Hey Owen,
Just to let you know, I have changed the title of your topic from "Lazius Niger" to the correct spelling of the ant - ie: "Lasius Niger" so as not to cause any confusion between species.
Best of luck with your ants, be sure to let us know how you get on with them! ;D

thanks myrm, had them for three days now and the farthest, a ant has been to the nesting box is 3/4 way up the connector tube, so its looking good. The queen has been eating some, food collected by the workers and is now half way up the test tube ;D

Ants are still good and are getting very active, as there are at least 4 ants foraging most of the day! queen is still shy but has moved a tiny bit away from the cotton wool (about a cm). so its looking good
