I have just got back from anting I turned over some rocks and under almost everyone of them there was a myrmica sp. colony in most I saw queens and I saw some pupae and cocoons (I thought myrmica don't spin cocoons). The queens were red with a darker thorax (the thorax was deep red/brown) than the rest of the body, the queens were larger than the workers. Next time I'm there I will get some pics, but does anyone know what species they are from this description? they were found in relativley open ground with a few small trrees.

Just hold up here. Cocoons? We've already ruled out anything in Myrmixa or Myrmicine family members just from that. Are you sure you saw cocoons?
