i use the guide on myrms site and also the ants of thee british isles guide, but i find it so hard to identify different ants!
is it normal to find it hard at first and get better at it over time? can anyone teach e a little more about the different things to look out for?

Adam Yes, it can be vary hard at first and even professional myrmecologists cannot tell certain species apart without a microscope. As you get more experienced you'll start recognising certain species.

Myrm, with your guide I've identified in my parents garden that ants I thought were rubra are in fact flavus! The nest - huge has been there at least 7 years. They are taking their brood underneath a loose brick nearby that has warmed in the sun.
