Iv heard mealworms canibalize each other They do, but many will survive. I've had a colony for years. Started it with a small tub of worms from pet shop. They look after themselves really. Like Dermy said just feed them oats ( I use porridge ) and a moist vegetable now and again. If you use a good substrate more will survive. I use cat litter and cotton. The cant climb glass either.

i used to breed mealworms till my reptiles got fed up of them, (and me too tbh) i just bought a tub of them from pet shop and left them, tipped them into another tub full of substrate (bran flakes or oats) when they eaten all the old stuff, and some slices patatoe/carrot now and again, they did the rest. never bred crickets. locusts are easy to breed, leave adults in a tub with substrate and egg boxes. feed and leave them to do they business. altho i would wonder if its worth breeding your own bugs for just ants as they wont eat enough to make it worth wise, unless you had a lot of ants! its only £2 a tub for bugs and saves much hassle to feed your animals.
