ive been reading about the varius Temnothorax species on ANTSTORE and it says being tiny ants and avoiding conflict, they can be kept together providing there is plenty of space ect. just wondering how easy this would be to achieve, i was thinking of a large tank with 3-4 species of Temnothorax, providing plenty of hiding places and acorns for them to nest, has it been done before? any tips? cheers everyone

I don't think that multiple colonies of Temnothorax is what they mean. You could keep another, docile species with them. Like a Lasius species.

The tank would be as large as it needed to be. So what u saying is they could co-live with say.. Lasius niger for example?

I have a lot of Temnothorax nylanderi colonies out in my local wood. Their are far more T. nylanderi workers than any other ant there which makes me think there must be a lot of colonies in a small area. I have the same idea with keeping Temnothorax and would love to build up a collection with lots of different Temnothorax species in one tank. I find them quite hard to keep though and have had less sucess with Temnothorax than any other ant genus.

why do you have a lot of trouble keeping them bobdol0? i love the idea of having more than one species of ant in a tank, i could make it like a miniture square of nature sort to speak. but i wouldnt just jump into it with both feet and throw some queens together hoping it would work, i just wanted to find out how easy it would be to be sucessful. ill keep looking into it but all species are intresting to keep alone so no worries if it cant be done, i wouldnt want to put the ants in harm.

I'm not really sure why I have trouble keeping them as they are meant to be very easy to keep. I just find they are so small it is hard to know if they are even still alive. They also nest in such tiny spaces - I thought one Leptothorax colony I had had escaped but they were actually just hiding in a tiny peice of wood which I overlooked. Still Temnothorax/Leptothorax are super interesting to keep so you should definatley try them out!

I do intend to keep them again one day, in two years time when I am home for good. Until then I am away so much of the year that it simply isn't feasible for me to get anymore ant colonies. I would like to try and keep a colony of these with a Lasius niger colony. Would be vary interesting to see what happens.
