Now this is embarrassing and weird seeing as I love ants - I find it really difficult to identify different species. I found this in my room this morning. It's not one of my L. niger, she's larger the them by a mm or two. Black all over apart from her legs are a light red/amber. She probably came in on my trouser yesterday early evening when I was catching flies. Please help to identify and is there a guide to help you when out ant hunting? Attachments:

To be honest it's more than likely a Lasius niger from a well eastablished nest, as these workers will be larger than those of a new colony. Though a bit blurred it does look like a Ln.

Ah thank you myrm. I'm finding identifying really difficult. Too big to be from my Niger I got two weeks ago right? Possibly. If you are not sure if she is one of yours then if you ants are in a set up (not a test tube) you could try introducing her to them to see what happens. If they fight then remove her. If you are uncertain then best not put her in there.

I think it's safe to assume shes an outsider - when I put her in she just tried to escape, fall off the pfte and tries again. Besides she is literally 4 times the size of the others I will put her outside where I think she may have come from.
Myrm do you know where I can get further info on help identifying ants in the field?
I'm sorry for being annoying

Adam15. If you go to my main ant website ( Myrm's Ant Nest) and look on the second page of the species tab, you should find a download pdf file with an identification key to all British species on it. It's all text, no pictures I'm afraid, though I will work on a picture key later in the year.
