Made this over the weekend. Cant decide what specie to get for it Any suggestions? Dimensions are about 250mm long x 160mm wide x 200mm high.

They are dimensions for the whole thing including moat. The nest itself is about the height and width of an iphone.

I was thinking pheidole pallidula but I heard they don't do well with moats.

Lasius Niger would just about fit but you may want to add another Nest as they grow.

I agree, but Ive got 3 L.niger colonies. I wanted something a bit different for this setup.

Myrmica Rubra may do well. I'm not that great with sizes, maybe Tetramorium?

it looks great, seems much bigger then an iphone!! what is that white stuff in the corner? cant help much with advising species, but what about L.flavus? they are small, and lovely coloured ants

Its a little bit bigger than an iphone, but not much. The white stuff is cotton wool in the water trough. Mmm, Lasius Flavus. Maybe

Remember Lasius Flavus generally forage underground, and do not like light..

Maybe Temnothorax nylanderi? There colony's don't grow that large, so you wont have to worry about them out growing it.

ah cotton wool, seems obvs now! ha its true that L.flavus dont like light, but if you cover the nest maybe that'll help. plus i dont think its as serious as some people suggest, surly if they were that hard to feed they wouldnt be recommended as a starter species? its a beautiful nest, shame its not larger as i recon messor barbarus would like it
