Oh jeeze, this is going to require some research. I think there are at least 21 different chemical signals on average (and all organic compounds, obviously.) I would think that these chemicals aren't always the same, between species, either.
I know this is isn't a chemical that living ants can "speak" but one ant only knows the other is dead is if they smell oleic acid. E.O. Wilson jokes about covering live ants with this chemical, and the ant's sisters would then haul her to the midden pile, where she would have to clean herself off before "rejoining the living." It's not enough for an ant to be dead; it needs to smell dead after a couple days before anybody in the nest knows what's going on. ;D

I have the book The Ants by Wilson and Holldobler on my iPad. I will look at it over the weekend and see what chemicals they state in there as I know it's there.

Yeaah E.O. Wilson's and Bert Holldolber's books are expensive but amazing. I brought it in hardback when it first came out. Cost me £135 back then. It's awesome having the hardback copy; the size, the colour photos, the smell of the book >.< But I love my Kindle version. I tend to read it on the iPad more than the Kindle as I get full colour pictures on that.
