Thunderstorm! I am correct in thinking this may trigger another flight (although smaller scale)?

Mum informed me of some alates testing the waters outside the nest today here in the east (they ended up getting more than they bargained for, as it started raining shortly afterwards). She said they were 'red ants', so I'll have to go check at some point whether they are myrmica or if she mistook flavus for reds. Sunny weather is on the way back after lots of storms, so I'm getting ready to collect once again

Lasius Niger are all over Harrow (North West London) at the moment. And perfect timing too. My test tubes along with other bits and bobs arrived in the mail this morning! Got 5 queens! Prepping the test tubes now.

You got queens? Is it ok if I don't send you the queens? Sorry, but if you already have queens, I would rather save the £5 of sending them I will delete the message with your adress

Flavus are swarming in the garden right now and I managed to nab a few wingless queens that were roaming around in the grass. As of yet I'm not sure if the flavus have actually flown, as I suspect the queens I picked up are all niger. Exciting day for ants in England!

I have had a patio full of queens and some males attached to them today, I captured three new queens, all L Niger I believe. Amazing seeing the queen running around like headless chickens looking for new nest homes. Its also amazing how small the males are, tiny in comparison, and the mating takes quite along time once they are joined. (Better not tell the wife that) But have only seen loads of LN in Norfolk.

...aaand the flavus are gone. Tubed up a queen and now she's safely stored alongside the three niger I wasn't sure I'd be able to tell them apart but was I ever wrong! Underside of the abdomen is quite yellow in comparison.

Massive nuptial flight in Lincolnshire as well today. After all the rain and the sun shining, I had a feeling it might be today and I actually had my test tubes in the car with me. As I was driving down my road the sparrows were going nuts and as soon as I opened the door of the car, the pavement and grass was literally crawling with Queens, of which 95% were wingless. Managed to collect some Flavus/Myrmica and Lasius Niger. The Flavus/Myrmica are definitely brownish/yellow in colour and smaller in size to the Lasius. In the sunshine, the colours were quite noticeable. All queens settling down in a nice dark area with a drink of honeywater.

One queen I caught had just mated and was still mating when I caught her, she still has her wings, does this mean she isn't inseminated fully yet ? Or will she pull her wings off soon? I can always let her go again and capture another wingless queen. But this one had mated for sure. But she doesnt seem settled in my tube, the other two I captured are settled. I dont want to keep this one if she isnt ready. Advice please.
