I need you guys to help me to make the right decision. I want to buy this set up: antstore.net/shop/product_info.php/info/p1446_alpha-ants-starter-kit---a.html(Mainly because of the great walkthrough created by Myrm on how to set it up properly + price seems fair) -How many ants can this set up hold? (without expanding) -How long for a queen + 11-25 workers to outgrow this set up? -What do I need besides everything that comes with the starter kit? So then my next question, what kind of ant should I choose? (Lasius flavus/Lasius niger/Myrmica rubra) -Which is most ideal to keep in the set up mentioned above? -I like active ants, that I can easily observe without spooking them too much. When my final decision has been made, I'll make some pictures and hold a log about my progress! I can't wait to finally get started! ;D

Hi tjgkessels I guess it really depends on which species of ant you plan to keep in there. If it is a species like Lasius niger then I would have thought a couple of hundred maybe 300. Myrmica probably about 100-200 as they tend to make vary large tunnels and chambers. 1 queen + 11-125 workers? It really depends again on various factors but I would guess 2-3 years, though they will generally restrict their colony size to the amount of room they have available. Personally, I would choose Lasius niger to go in there. Ln are vary active ants (though they are also the naughtiest species). Those little set ups are great. I am sure one of our bin lid members has one this size and they may be able to advise you further. I look forward to seeing your pictures and hearing about how you get on. Oh, and thank you vary much for the postive feedback on my set up guide.

Yes, I have a set-up which is of exactly the same size, and I two recommend Lasius Niger. I however prefer artificial nests as you can always see your ants, these include wood/cork, ytong, plaster.

Too bad I wasn't at home yesterday otherwise I've would have been a proud owner of my first colony + starter kit! I found a note in my mailbox saying that I can pick it up on TUESDAY 29th of May......I'm worried my ants will be dead by then (or at least a lot of them).....Can anybody tell me if they have a chance to survive? I'm actually worried about this..
(Lasius Niger, queen + 11-25 workers)
