I recently bought a Can 'O' Crickets from the now newly named Edu-Sci of which it's name escapes me.... Anyway, I have a large nest of Myrmica rubra, upon placing the cricket in they seemed to simply 'Smell' it and not pay anymore attention to it than that. So I decided to crush the cricket a little as maybe it's carpace was too thick... Still not much attention given to it... I'm not sure why they aren't eacting it, infact I put a crushed earwig in there earlier this week and they paid no attention to that either. The only thing they appear to enjoy is the pieces of tangurine I place in there as they drink it and carry it back to the nest in their swollen abdomens. I would have thought they would need the protein from the insects for the larvae and to encourage further laying of eggs? Help

Yeah, I second what jon said, ants prefer fresh food as they can suck up the juices ;D

Ah see now I can happily say that the cans both keep the crickets fresh and juicy infact! I myself was surprised at how fresh the crickets were, almost as if they were freshly killed moments beforehand!
I'm also happy to say that the ants are now all over the cricket sucking up the juices from where I crushed it earlier ;D
