Hi, I am new here and very much a beginner concerning ants. I was recently considering Lasius Niger (a queen with 20 workers) with an Ant World enclosure. This is the only one I could find that was narrow (so I will be able to see the nest clearly) and not £40 +. Is it any good? Would anyone recommend another enclosure? Well, I was about to order the ants when I came across the Camponotus Ligniperda species - the sound perfect for me, big, not too hard to look after, very social and aggressive. I love the idea of them. However, I have read that they normally burrow and make a nest under rotting wood. Does this mean that they would not thrive at all under sandy substrate like the Lasius Niger would? What kind of cage would they need - a tank with a log in it? Sorry, I am very inexperienced with ants. Any cages you would recommend? I would really appreciate any tips or info, especially if you keep Camponotus Ligniperda!! Thanks so much!

Thay do not realy need wood to burrow under the enclosure dose not need to be big for a young colony, and if you are going to get a slim tank it should be at least 2-3cm wide.

Thanks so much abeloyd! So does that mean I could just give them the special ant sandy substrate (dampish), like the Lasius Niger? And I'm really sorry, but the link didn't take me anywhere specific.... Would you recommend any of the slim cages for them? Thanks again!!

It isn't a good idea to have Camponotus Ligniperda as a first time species. There colony's grow slow and the mayors get around 15mm long and can give a nasty bite. Like abeloyd has said lasius niger is the best species for beginner. They multiply fast and are a hardy species.
But if your heart is set on having Camponotus Ligniperda I recommend buying are large colony ( around 100-200). I kept my old colony in a ytong set up, but a aquarium half filled with sand/loam will work fine.

Pah, You'd have loved Rubra's more :/. Just joking around ;D, But yes, Nigers are very cool, here's a fact, they are not actually black they are dark brown. I have kept them before and they are AWESOME but for me never lived well like my Rubra's .

Rubra's have the naughtiest queens of all species as they keep going out the nest for a walk.

Yes that has happened to me but they never really went for a scenic walk, They just ran into the connector tube popped out some eggs and ran. I remember reading a Myrmica Specie journal of yours where you wrote something saying a queen got stuck under some dirt, Got free'd and carried on walking around, Interesting!
