I'm considering purchasing a colony of 51-100 rubras, but I was wondering what would be the best to keep them in. They will be kept on my desk where I can see, and so far I've thought of these options: - Slim Farm (I already own it)
- Ytong farm from Antstore
- Ant Hills nests
- TREE STUMPS
- END OF THE ROAD
If I used the Slim Farm or any of Igor's nests I would need to purchase an outworld. The main reason I'm stuck is with the farm being on my desk, there's the possibility of the odd bang etc., which, if I use the Slim Farm may cause a collapse. I could keep the Slim farm on my shelf, but I would need to stand on my chair to be able to have a decent look. Which would you guys go for?

Hey drew, I own the Ytongnest - Premium 30x20x5 and it currently holds about 60 rubras. It's a great formicarium and you can easily hydrate the nest. ;D

Yes, it looks like a nice nest. The one thing I notices was the feeding area looks a bit small. I did like the idea they had for hyrdation though.

Yeah, it is quite small... but i manage ;D It's big enough to put a live mealworm in and them swarm it. You can also decorate it - YAY! You could perhaps go for the next size up as it has a larger feeding area

What about the bottom one with the upright nest? The only issue I see with it as that there doesn't seem to be any room to hydrate it. O.O

Another option would be
I'd probably get option three. With this though I would again need some sort of outworld.

Michael informs me that the slim farm I have could accommodate < 500 workers, meaning I could get the rubras and only need an outworld. If the colony grows large enough I could extend the farm using another slim farm or a ytong nest (I'd probably go for a ytong nest so I could observe them in both environments). That's what I may do. One question about Slim farms, how easy are they to move? I don't want to not be able to move them because I may have no choice.

Michael informs me that the slim farm I have could accommodate > 500 workers...( Check my text message to you again Drew. I said <500 not >500. There's a difference.
