This thread was made to stop Timenova's journal being killed. My view on this is- "Yes it is illegal so it should not be done, but if no harm comes of it, it canot be that bad. And if I was in Australia and came across for instance a Myrmecia or weaver ant queen, I would probably risk it...

I must admit that it would be sorely tempting, especially since these species you might see everywhere during your holiday may be at a ridiculous price online. If, for example I found a Pheidologeton diversus queen, I would probably have a huge mental battle between my good and bad sides with probably the bad one winning.

Precautions would have to be taken to avoid another Solenopsis invicta incident of course, but I think that our cousins across the sea should be allowed to buy ants foreign to them.

On an individual level, you have to realize that it's not worth taking ecological and economic risks just so that you can have a fancy pet. If ant trade is supposed to have any integrity at all, then it must be restricted to professionally assessed and approved insects, and any company which is in the business of ant trade MUST follow the law. Ants-Kalytta isn't just a morally flexible hobbyist; it's a business that ignored the laws of another country to make a profit. Gerhard Kalytta didn't just take a cool queen he found. He took hundreds of them.
At the least, smuggling is extremely disrespectful to any country you are visiting or returning to.

My views are very like Batspiderfish. I really feel that it isn't worth the risk, and I may sure not to take any queens while on holiday, no matter how tempting. I found a Pheidole queen in Hawaii, and with a very large amount of hesitation, left her. My good side one. As a young 'biologist' I try to be responsible with our ecosystems. As Timenova said; We don't want another 'Solenopsis invica' type invasion.
