I have caught around 20 Lasius Niger queens 2 Flavus (Don't know where from as I see No Colonies) and 5 Myrmica Rubra's.
All Of My Nigers have died, Some survived some Escaped, Flavus I gave away and My Rubra's never laid so I fed them to my Other rubra's.
They are really easy to catch, I caught over 8 of them with my hands, It's easy Just grab their Thorax NOT their Head Or Gaster and You should be fine, Just be gentle If You get caught short (Not that way) Pick them up and Cup Your hands, Run Home as fast as You can and put them in a tub THEN put them in tubes!

Yes colonies do sometimes split, this is (I believe) called "budding", it is also common in forica rufa i think. Yes they do have nuptial flights, but queens often return to the nest.

You want to be careful to make the formicarium VERY escape proof. They are tiny ants and you don't want to release foreign ant species into Britain.

As far as I know there are no ants native to Britain which have a soldier caste.
