They were affected in my city already. Camponotus chromaoides major flight took place two weeks earlier than last year. I have already seen two small Camponotus castaneus flights, and they do not fly until the end of May here. Maybe they did wake up early!

I agree the nuptial flights that accur early on are those colonies that produce their alates during the last fall. The alates hibernate in the colony until the perfect conditions set in. No matter what time of the year. Then they fly and the queens either setup shop or they continue to hibernate for a while.

You should check at earlier times too, because there are species like Tetramorium which fly in late May through June.

I'm expecting a late start now because of the cold, I think they will be in Late June and onwards, but I'm keeping my test-tubes ready to bag some nigers and the odd Sabuleti, Last year I got about 12 queens, 1 being a Rubra but she hadn't layed so I put he in my Rubra farm, don't know what happened to her though, for all I know she could have picked up scent and started laying!

I don't plan to get any queens this year. I have a large myrmica rubra colony anyway.
