When I will need to purchase a nice formicarium for my Tetramorium. While I plan to make homemade slim nests for my Lasius and Formica, I would like an artificial nest made of plaster or the like for my smallest ants. Being Myrmicines, Tetramorium have naked pupae which create another reason to house them where I can very easily view them. I am fascinated by ant brood. I am considering the AntHills.net Tree Stumps www.anthills.net/tree-stumps.html (Click the 'Click Here' link at the bottom if it says 'URL Not Found'. This may or may not happen for you) model. It is fairly cheap (Though still very expensive for a 14 year old like me, over $60) compared to the other models, and it looks, well, awesome! What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

It looks a bit small for the sized ants I would like to see in it, but I think for smaller colonies it would be amazing, yes.
If you are brave enough to buy it, a review wouldn't go a miss. And if it's a good one then I think it will improve the prospects of the site owners as well. XD

I'm not too concerned about the size, as my ants are Tetramorium and they aren't very large at all - smaller than Lasius niger. It should last them a year at the very minimum. The owner sent images of the formicarium he made me (I will be receiving it free - as long as I paid shipping) and he has gone above and beyond. At my request he made it lighter in color. Without me knowing it, he added side tunnels because he read one of my posts. ;D I would give AntHills.net a A+ for customer service so far, as it has been just excellent.

Hi Limes,
I have order the Tree Stumps formicarium as well and am waiting for it to arrive, I am very excited over it and am going to house my M Barbarus in it. When I get it I will review it and I agree with you over the customer service it is definitely A+ and they are very quick to answer any queries.
Can you post some pictures of the Formicarium that he has made for you please it would be good to see how it compares to the Tree Stumps one. Just paying shipping fees is excellent you can't get no better than that.

These are the photos that Ingus (AntHills.net) has sent me of my formicarium. Some show mine (Lighter colored nest) in contrast to the standard colored nest. Regular ‘Tree Stumps’ Nest on left, My custom lighter one on the right. Similar as above but zoomed in. Shows greater contrast between colors and tunnels added between side chambers. Outer surface of nest, highly detailed. Tunnel work and chambers. Tunnel work and chambers.

Do the chambers/tunnels come interconnected as standard are did you have to request it? May think about getting one as they'd look awesome on my desk. Oh, and are these nests a one time use really? /just read on the website that the tunnels are not connected as standed.

The tunnels are not connected standardly, but he saw that I thought it would be a good idea elsewhere and put them in without my knowledge. I believe that the nest can be removed from the box and cleaned, but I'm not sure. Hopefully he logs on soon. I will be doing a large review after I get and use it, so if you aren't sure I'll be happy to answer any questions at that time.

Lets hope the ants decide to nest where you can see them if the tunnels are out of view. And I lol'ed when I saw "when I get home from school". Makes me feel like an old man (i'm 18 and out of school now) ;P Dread to think how Myrm must feel sometimes.

This formicarium still hasn't arrived yet. THE AGONY!
I am sad to hear that it cannot be removed from the box, as I was hoping it would. Reusable formicariums are very popular right now.

OK. Is it true that the box scratches easily? I will be careful with it.
