Hi
As I often do I was reading Myrms old journals and looking at a pages on antstore. ;D
1 particular species caught my eye, (Temnothorax). They seem rather interesting, though IF I was to buy a colony, I would not do so until 4-5 months into 2012. But I have a few questions, which you may be able to answer about the species.
Q.It states that they can be kept with other ants as they avoid contact, but what if for instance another colony wants the acorn they are in, do they just give it up and run off?
Q. It says that there needs to be whether like it is on the surface (as they live there). What if these conditions cannot be made?
Q. And, is this a interesting species to keep (Myrm)?

I can't imagine other ants wanting the acorn but if hey did I would have thought that they would defend their nest like any other ant would. Mine moved out of heir acorn.
Do you men weather? I can't see that makes much difference. They'll live the current micro environment our current ants wold live in
All ants are interesting to keep.

Attention: Temnothorax directly lives on the ground. Therefore the colony needs daily temperature changes. It is important to simulate realistic temperature changes of day and night as well as summer and winter. Temnothorax is resistant against cold temperatures.
Is exactly what it says... What if my room doesn't suddenly turn 0 degrees in winter?

I wouldn't think they are all that demanding. There are a few wild varieties here; they are tough, small, nomadic colonies that don't present much of a competitive threat to other ants in the wild. I would be afraid of keeping them in captivity with other ants, though, as there is such limited space. They would be able to defend their nest to some degree, but they would probably have a lot of trouble foraging.

What if my room doesn't suddenly turn 0 degrees in winter? Is the heating on in your bin lid room 24 hours a day? There will be temperature fluctuations in your room. If you are that worried then what you could do is when you go to school each morning you could turn off the heating in your room and open a window. Then when you get home from school, turn the heating on. In that way you'll get temperature fluctuations. When it rains outside you could always spray some water into the tank, and, of course, unless you locked them away in a dark place they'll have normal light changes; your bin lid room is dark when you are asleep at night?

Could 2 (or more) Temnothorax coloines be kept in the same set-up then? Or are the same species hostile?

I found a nice woden box with a plastic slide lid. It measures 10x33x8cm... 8cm being the vertical side.
