It's not essential but I would say, preferable.

It depends on how many ants. The more ants the more need of a foraging tank. Also stops mould from forming in your colonies nest. I have also seen that without a foraging tank they make a chamber for garbage and with a foraging tank they put the garbage out and you can remove it.

Just so long as it is large enough to allow the ants to stretch their legs. The bigger it is, the harder it is for new colonies to find food, so if you only have a small colony, design a small- medium sized foraging area.

MAYBE a silly question but do they need a forage tank? was thinking of Niger ants, i have built the farm and that is about as far as i have got. Hello Stroudy and Welcome to Our Forum. When you are making a topic's title, please do not use all caps unless you really need the attention of Staff over a serious issue, or if your question is in dire need of answering. This is normally called 'SHOUTING'. In relation to your question, as others have correctly stated, the size of your outworld/foraging arena should reflect the amount and size of your ants. You will need to remember that this is the ant's outside world, and shouldn't be too small. Check out www.AntsCanada.com and look at their outworlds for inspiration. Then go to Myrm's website ( www.antnest.co.uk) and find the Keeping Ants section. Click the link titled "Here’s another small guide on how to create a foraging arena for your ant farm which was created by one of the Forum’s bin lids (kids)." -Limes, DA

Could you post a picture? Just place the food near the entrance and it'll function just as it would if it was smaller.

I will try in the morning as silicone is still drying and I'm in bed now lol. The foraging tank is 3ftLx1ftWx2ftH and the nest is 17"X31"x1". Maybe a different species of ant or any suggestions

Pictures would help loads. I advise that you do the plaster method I have showed you. Works wonders and makes your ants easy to see.
