I have come across a website which sells a variety of exotic ants. These ants are captured in Thailand and then imported to the UK. They seem to have reasonable prices for mature colonies, including a plaster nest. Has anyone purchased ants from them before? Are they good? EDIT: Oops, forgot the link: www.myantshop.com/home.htm

I think it would be worth finding out if what they are doing is legal. I am not sure what the customs rules are for exporting live insects out of Thailnd. If I was considering purchasing from them I personally would contact them first and ask for verification of the rules and proof showing how they are abiding by them. That's just me though. I'm a policeman and so I tend to be more cautious and concerned about laws and rules. Remember what happened to the owner of Ants Kalytta last year when he was caught smuggling live ants out of Australia/NZ for onward selling from his Germany based store.

Was it not the owners son? No. It was the owner. He's 65.

I emailed "Peter", asking is it legal as I may be purchasing in the future... (Which I will do 1 day : . (I did say it better!) He replied just after 12 last night, saying. I have been exporting orchid plants from Thailand for over 25 years and this has given me the knowledge and experience in exporting live goods. Before I set up my ant shop I visited the Thai Department of Wildlife to explain what I wanted to do and they said as long as I followed their guidelines then everything was legal. Exportation from Thailand is completely legal but you will find that it is the importation where the problem arises. Different countries have different regulations regards the importation of insects and it is up to the importer to ensure that all the local regulations are followed. Many countries require that the colonies are sent to their Department of Wildlife / Animal Health first to be checked for any accompanying pests etc before they can be forwarded onto the customer.

I know this thread is old, but Myrm, it has this forum on its "Links" page.
