Hi guys,
So I have my ants, they are now in the farm and still inside the testube. There has been little movement, never more than two outside of the tube at a time where they gather sand and bring it back into the tube. It looks as if they are trying to block the end off. Is this pre hibernation behaviour, and if so should I feed them? just ordered some meal worms and was wondering if the lack of protein so far could be affecting their behaviour?

Hey, Yeh I think that is a common thing when its hibernation time. What kind of ants is it you have? My M rubra have done that as well. But sometime they would block the tunnel for the hell of it, probably for safety. You could leave food out for them and see if they take it but depending on the species they might not be interested if they are going to hibernate.

L.niger, yeah I'll give it a go. There are eggs in there too, will everything survive the hibernation? also should I put the worms in killed?

Apparently sometimes the eggs are eaten. The larvae can hibernate though. Not too sure, why not try one dead and one alive? Where did you get the worms from?

Yes very similar to that with my lot. They are meal worms from an online live foods store.

Put the worms in chopped up (they tried to burrow else) and once the ants found them and some orange pieces they became more active and have been feeding the protein back to the test tube.
I'm going home for christmas from uni in a week, would it be best to take them with me or let them hibernate? I'll be gone for a few weeks.

I would let them stay, as if you bring them down they are likely to be hurt in the journey. Ant colonies can go a while without food.
