All the formicaria I've made are upright, and my Formica aserva's plaster nest is probably the most unstable. It tumbled off of a small table as I was adding the other nests. I think everybody is alright, but there's now dirt all over the glass. It's never good to stress your colony out either, especially during hibernation.
