will the ants hibernate when they have eggs? Normally the queen will cease egg production some weeks before the hibernation phase sets in so that any remaining eggs will at least be larvae by hibernation.

These leads me to three conclusions. 1) The eggs are there but you can't see them. 2) The eggs have been eaten 3) The eggs have hatched into first stage larvae which are hidden away.

If you are talking about the ones in your bin lid room then they won't hibernate fully as it will always be warm compared to outside. If you are talking about ones in the wild; then it is not unusual to still find the occasional worker ant walking about at this time of year, particularly as November has been quite warm this year.

my room just the odd one befor he went back in if there not hibernating well there not taking food :/ Ah, well you see, Liam Bin Lid, I bet your bin lid room has a radiator or some other form of heating in it which is probably on at this time of year (or at least I'd hope so as we don't want my awesome bin lid friend getting cold ). Even if you didn't have any heating in there it would still be generally warmer than outside. Ants don't hibernate much above 5*C so unless you have no heating and the window open 24 hours a day your bin lid room won't get cold enough for them to hibernate. However; they do seem to sense when it is the hibernation period and so the queen may reduce her egg laying to vary little or no eggs at all. They may not take food as they will slow their activities down and if there is no brood in the nest (or if the brood have gone into stasis) then they will require vary little food. Yes, if they needed food they would get it.
