Do Myrmica rubra have more then one queen?

they can yes as they are polygamous but they don't need to have more than one queen but usally they have a multiple queen colony

what do you mean? the queens usally cooperate throughout the life of the colony with new queens joining when either they are produced in the nest and a mated with by males that are attracted to the queens or the can join when mating flights happen. although there can be a hierachy with certain queens being higher up than others they usally share egg laying responsabilitys

wen the queen dies dose the nest pick a worker to become queen? Workers are not 'fertile'. Sometimes they can lay eggs I believe, but they develop into alates, I think only female alates too, but I'm not certain.

Yes thats right generally queen dies= end of colony. Unless it has more than one quene. I think in 1 species a workers becomes fertile... But u r not going to keep them.

So far as we're concerned, unfertilized eggs will always become males. The workers may accept a new queen of the same species, or perhaps you can try a social parasite! ;D
