Hi my M. Rubra just waled over a load of sugar when I put it in, not even taking 1 bit to the nest. When I gave some to L, Niger they did the same (wild Lasius Niger). Is this normal for ants not to even take notice of sugar, which I have been told ants like very much?

Is it all dry?
Try dropping a drop of water or two onto a part of it and see if they take any notice of that?

There might be two reasons they aren't interested in the sugar: 1. If it is dry, then they must expend water to dissolve and drink it. Ants can only eat liquids. Also, ants do not take sugary food back to the nest (unless it is in their stomach.) 2. Winter is coming, and ants are slowing down their metabolism for hibernation. They aren't going to eat much until spring.

i know what you mean mine are always patroling and sense when i turn on the light or lift up the lid and they send out extra patrols ,so annoying. but so far only one ant escaped. you have to be quick feeding them as one always likes to sit on the lid.

You can always use talcum powder to keep them in.
