Right. Well I persuaded my parents to let me do the following... I will "build" a kinda coffin with no lid or bottom. Which I will place in the far corner of the garden. This is be around 50cm deep. It will then be filled with earth. Hopefully if all goes to plan I will collect some Myrmica queens from the local woods. Where I will either directly put them in there, or keep them until they grow. This is because I want a wider range of ants in my garden, the reason it is in the box is as, they will no easily be destroyed by Ln. So it will create a "safe" area for Myrmica, if you guys think of any things I could do better, or any problems, let me kmow. JON

I think it's a great idea, Jon. Look forward to hearing how it goes.

Yes, queens don't always nest where you want them to, they will most likely scurry off unless you put a tank over the soil and wait 1 month or something then take the tank off, but if you get a queen, try to get some brood and workers with her.

Right, didn't think of the fact that ants actually have legs... . And rubra, I would probably make it a multi queened colony, to increase their chances. And the same way I would, most like keep them in a test tube until workers hatch. But even if they don't nest there where I wanted, they will still be in the garden... I just won't know where.

I just won't know where. Don't worry, Jon. They'll soon become evident as the colony grows.

I know there is a Myrmica colony in my garden as I have seen males, for like the past 5 years... But I was never able to locate it.
The thought just occurred to me that the males and queen are roughly the same size right?

A while ago I though about doing something like this with Myrmica sp./spp. and Lasius flavus, but not just in my garden, as it's just a small courtyard. There is a recreation ground nearby which I believe would be suitable for Lasius flavus, and there are some stepping stones in the courtyard which might be good for the Myrmica sp..
