Do they escape alot? Do they explore even with a small number of workers?

They have very small workers so naturally they are quite good at escaping I can't answer question 2 with any accuracy but I would say that most species that reproduce like them are timid in small colonies and naturally they have less needs so less need to forage. By that I mean, army ants split off tens of thousands of workers to start a colony so they won't be timid in that sense. EDIT by the way it's Pheidole pallidula, it will help the site to be found by google and other search engines if people at least spell the ants names properly, if you aren't sure (as some are tough to remember) use google too not digging at you Thomas, useful if everyone did the same!

Can't answer number two.
Mine escaped underneath blu-tac. So be warned! But it didn't go far, as long as the queen can't get out and the workers can get back, you should be fine.
