Say I had my ants in a tupperware box (from which they shouldn't be able to escape...) then put that in a tray and filled the tray with water, would any escapees climb down to the water, realise they can't go any further and then go back?
Or would I come home to find drowned ants?

There will be the inevitable accident. Ants are vary clever and can use items to put in the water in order to cross over.

Drowned ants. BUT ants can live for three days in water. They will appear dead, remove them and put them on some tissue, it helps to put another ant that didn't nearly drown, with them. It will clean the others and give them life! I did this, it saved almost a whole colony and a larvae.
