Ok what about a colony of 5 to 15 in a starter set B from Ants unearthed?

There is no real 'right' answer, Liam. Ant colonies can begin and thrive in a test tube (or smaller in fact, just enough space for the Queen to move around in) and then the needs grow along with the number of workers as you well know, you will have to balance the needs of the colony against your budget, if you can't afford a huge basin now, get a smaller one and plan to save for a bigger one in the future or buy a basin that allows easy and affordable expansion so you can add to it as the colony grows, there is no right size, as long as you provide the ants with extra space as and when they need it
