I found a little red ant today I poked it a few times to see if it would try to sting me but it just cept running away, I thought it was mayby myrmica rubra but like I said it wasn't trying to sting me, anyone know what it may have been? I live in east lothian Scotland.

Still might be Rubra. Was it a bit Yellow?

After a 5 minute search the only species I could suggest that ISN'T Myrmica is Leptothorax acervorum: www.eakringbirds.com/eakringbirds6/insectinfocusleptothoraxacervorum.htmThey are present in Scotland and East Lothian, but I do think you will most likely have seen a Myrmica species. Other than a Formica ant, but these are large, usually 2 tone in colour when red so would be more obvious. Even Leptothorax acervorum is slightly 2 tone so I would think you'd recognise the pictures if it is what you saw.
