Hey guys I'm thinking of starting a second ant farm and was thinking of getting L. Niger ants as they eat almost anything and are easy to keep. I hear L. Flavus are very similar, the question I want to ask is, will it be any harder to keep these ants? I want to get them because they are yelloW! And my last question is, are there any ants you can buy that are a cool colour? like blue !

Yes, they will be harder to keep as they have feeding problems and take food less.
Not for the beginner, there are not. I think they all look neat in their own ways anyways though.

When you say "not for the beginner" are you talking about cool colored ants?

Hi Sainter.
I have two species of yellow ant at the moment; Lasius umbratus and Lasius flavus.
Lasius flavus are the more difficult to keep out of the two, not because they are particularly hard to keep but because they tend not to emerge from their nests at all. I have found that the best way to keep and feed these ants is to keep the entire ant farm covered up in darkness as they prefer to feed in the dark.

Myrm, I don't think I'm going to get LF as if they like dark that much I won't see them! Lol.
I am thinking of getting some Myrmrica Rubra as suggested by Thomas.
Just a quick question Thomas, are they much harder to keep than L. niger? Also I'm thinking of buying a new basin, its 20cm*10cm*10cm.
Do you think thats big enough for a colony of 1 queen + 40 workers of Myrmrica Rubra

I will leave this question to the keepers of M Rubra of the forum, I havnt ever kept them as I think they are actually quite expensive for a lone flat owner who works at Tesco

Thomas I love their colour, but its not as drastic as blue ants that I wanted, but I cant seem to buy blue ants. So I think I'm going to go with more L. Niger ants.

If you keep Rubra in Y-tong or concrete then they like their nests very damp and humid. They're very insectiverous and apparently appreciate other nesting areas seperate from the main site. (sattelite.)
Also if you just a get queen, you have to give her food as she will actually forage.

If you live in the Uk M rubra are very easy to find and keep. The basin size you want would be fine for a medium size colony. Oh and what is that in the picture it doesnt look like an ant to me it has too many body parts.
