I've just purchased an ant-o-sphere, and set it up with 3 red pods at the bottom, 1 red pod on the 2nd floor, 3 clear pods on the 3rd floor and finally 1 clear pod on the top floor(penthouse). I have fully filled all the red pods with a mixture of 2/3 soil and 1/3 sand, the clear pods are half filled with a sand and soil mixture with the top clear pod half filled with sand and soil with a layer of gravel on top. I intend on growing cress in the 3rd level clear pods just to add some vegetation. I have already ordered a lasius niger queen ant with 10 workers. When the queen and workers arrive, which pod would be best to introduce them too? Thanks. Attachments:

I would say in one of the red, bottom pods.
This would replicate what would happen in the wild. The top, clear pods would represent the outside whilst the bottom, red pods would represent the internal nest.
The only worry I have about regarding your nest is that, in my opinion it is a bit too big/spacious for such a young L.Niger colony but of course many people have had success introducing a small colony into a big setup.
Thanks,
Animal Bin Lid.

Well there is only 4 underground pods and the rest would be classed as outside, so when I receive the new queen and workers I will attach them to 1 of the lowest pods, I will obviously keep the forum informed of the proceedings of the nest.

So if I attached the container with the queen and workers in it to the 1 of the bottom pods would they start to burrow into the soil and create there nest? Also would they find the tube sections to work there why up to the outside pods? What is the best to feed L.Niger ants and where would the food be best placed in my set up?

I would introduce the ants to what you call "the 2nd floor". The reason being is that they would be closer to the feeding pods and when they are ready to expand they can go downwards like they naturally would.
You should feed L. niger ants a mixture of food types. This can be freshly killed insects, protein jelly, honeywater, fruit, etc. Basically anything that has protein for the larvae and anything that is a sweet liquid for the adults.

Thanks Flavus. I appreciate the advice. I will now introduce the queen to the solitary red pod on the sencond floor, which thinking about it is really, common sense.
