Hello neon, I think I speak for all of us Members by saying thank-you for what you said about Myrm's website and MANF. ;D Are you looking for suggestions on what to order to get you all set-up? If so then a price range would be a good start. If you are looking for general tips then there is a FAQ page that can be located here. myrm.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=genants&action=display&thread=3145If you are looking for answers to more specific questions then please ask them. I will get a couple of recommendations for you tomorrow. Do you mind if you PM me the general location of where you live? It will help with a store selection. Also if you have a preference of store this can worked in. Flavus

As you speak in pounds I will assume you're British. £150 can buy you a lot! You could probably get a tropical species with a suitable setup for that, but I recommend you start with a nice easy native species. For your first colony, I'd spend as little as possible. You can get a large faunarium (plastic tank) from Pets at Home for something like ten pounds. Put some soil and a flatish stone in there and it's a perfect setup for Lasius niger or Myrmica rubra. You can buy a Lasius niger queen with 4-15 workers for just over ten pounds from Ants Unearthed. That's all you need really. You will want to escape proof the faunarium with something other than the lid, because the workers would probably be able to get through the holes. That's just £20-£25 for a small colony and a suitable formicarium.

I was new to ant keeping (Queens anyway) late last summer and the only thing I regret doing is buying too few ants, I got a Lasius niger Queen and about 10 workers, and it takes them a while to settle in, I wish I had started with more workers (say 50?) and then as I gained patience and experience gone onto smaller colonies and even just Queens.

Alright here are my recommendations. I will give you an expensive option and a more economic choice. Please realize that you do not need all of this stuff to be a successful ant keeper. I just find it more aesthetically pleasing. Example: You do not need a fancy food dish like at Ants Unearthed, a water bottle cap or other small lid will work perfectly fine. Expensive Route:Starter Set C antsuk.com/ant-colony-starter-kit-cLasius niger antsuk.com/black-ant-colony-lasius-nigerAnt Jelly Selection 20 pack antsuk.com/ant-jelly-selection-20-packsMini meal worms (The mini version simply because the colony is small, if you prefer to go with the large ones then it is advisable to chop them up into smaller bits.) antsuk.com/can-o-mini-mealwormsSquare Feeding Dish 60mm- This will be used to place the dead insects in. Having a feeding dish makes it a lot easier to clean up any leftover insect bits. antsuk.com/feeding-dish-square-30mm-241Round Feeding Dish- Perfect to place a bit of honey water soaked cotton ball into. antsuk.com/round-feeding-dish-30mmTotal:110.54Economic RouteStarter kit A- Unfortunately is out of stock right now so it will delay your order. antsuk.com/ant-starter-setLasius niger colony antsuk.com/black-ant-colony-lasius-nigerMini mealworms- Not really necessary as you can go to your garden to collect them but just In cas you cannot find any insects around you will have a source of protein to fall back to. antsuk.com/can-o-mini-mealwormsYou would then just need to find a suitable lid for a feeding dish and another one that a piece of cotton ball can fit comfortably into. Total: 65.85If anybody sees anything I missed then please say so. Flavus
